Low sun highlights the yellow painted iron of the old pier at North Berwick harbour. Clean and cool, the north sea gleams in luminous green beyond the steps. The "Sula", an open wooden boat which offers trips out to the Bass Rock on good summer days, sails from this pier at low tides. The "Sula" takes her name from the old Latin name for the gannet "sula bassanus", and has been operated by the Marr family of North Berwick since 1961.
